1. под конец (чего) when sth. is approaching its conclusion:

- toward (near) the end (of sth.).

     ♦ В начале следствия, как заметил О. М[андельштам], следователь держался гораздо агрессивнее, чем под конец (Мандельштам 1). At the beginning of the interrogation, M[andelstam] noticed, the interrogator had behaved much more agressively than toward the end (1a).

2. used to introduce the final event in a series:

- in the end;

- finally.

     ♦ Их обгоняли конные, и Прохор, не выдержав, останавливал проезжавших, здоровался, спрашивал, куда едут... под конец говорил: "Зря едете" (Шолохов 5). If anyone on horseback overtook them, he [Prokhor] could not resist stopping him with a greeting and asking where they were heading for...and in the end he would say, "You're making a mistake to go on" (5a).

     ♦ Года три-четыре по смерти второй жены он [Фёдор Павлович] отправился на юг России и под конец очутился в Одессе, где и прожил сряду несколько лет (Достоевский 1). Three or four years after his second wife's death, he [Fyodor Pavlovich] set off for the south of Russia and finally wound up in Odessa, where he lived for several years in a row... (1a).
